Research Synopsis
The ACT Center is committed to maintaining an aggressive scientific agenda. The discovery of knowledge and development of new clinical strategies for enhancing efforts to manage tobacco dependence are key components in the effort to reduce tobacco use prevalence and the associated suffering and mortality. A large portion of the suffering and mortality related to tobacco use is experienced by those who have developed cancer as a result of the use of tobacco or through exposure to second hand smoke. Given that the development of many forms of cancer have been directly linked to tobacco use, efforts to identify predictors of treatment outcomes and to develop more effective treatments to reduce tobacco use are imperative. Recent research agendas of the ACT Center include: the identification of factors that may predict treatment outcome in a statewide intensive tobacco treatment program; the effects of brief intervention training for tobacco dependence on provider attitudes, confidence, and practices; and identification of possible genetic mediators of tobacco treatment outcomes to develop a better understanding of how genetic factors may help determine which tobacco cessation medications are more effective for particular individuals.
